Position Summary: The Community Safety & Enforcement Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and implementing the community safety and enforcement components of Sagkeeng’s Drug Strategy and related by-laws.
This position focuses on:
- Community safety initiatives (e.g., community checks, safety planning)
- Enforcement of drug-related by-laws, bans, trespass orders, and conditions
- Coordination with security/peace officers, RCMP, courts, housing, and other partners
- Supporting safe, culturally grounded approaches that balance enforcement with healing
The coordinator works in close partnership with the Drug Strategy Coordinator and the Enforcement Committee to reduce drug trafficking, gang activity, and related harms, while upholding Sagkeeng’s values, culture, and community vision.
Key Responsibilities:
Enforcement Coordination & By-Law Implementation
- Support Chief & Council, legal counsel, and leadership with the implementation of the Drug By-Law and related Band Council Resolutions.
- Maintain organized records of enforcement actions
- Help develop and refine enforcement protocols, standard operating procedures, and safety guidelines for staff and leadership.
- Develop and implement practical tools for frontline staff (incident reporting forms, safety checklists, communication phone trees, etc.).
- Track and analyze patterns in suspicious activity, known drug houses, and gang presence to inform proactive safety actions.
- Participate in on-site response and follow-up after critical safety events (within scope and in coordination with leadership/RCMP).
- Serve as a primary contact between Sagkeeng leadership and RCMP and other police/peace officer services, Courts, probation, and legal counsel, Housing, CFS, and other internal departments
- Attend relevant case conferences, court meetings, and inter-agency safety meetings as delegated.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Community Safety, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field; a combination of education and significant relevant experience will be considered.
- 3+ years of experience in at least one of the following: law enforcement, community safety, security/peace officer roles, justice services, or community-based enforcement coordination.
- Experience working with First Nations communities, ideally with Sagkeeng or other Anishinaabe communities.
- Experience coordinating multi-partner safety or justice initiatives, committees, or task forces.
